A week after Toyota Motor Corp. announced to suspend U.S sales of eight car models, the company has declared again to recall an additional 1.09 million vehicles in the United States to fix faulty gas pedals and problems over floor mats.
Last week, Toyota issued a recall for 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, Certain 2007-2010 Camry, 2010 Highlander except hybrid models, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2008-2010 Sequoia, affecting 2.3 million vehicles.
The second recall would affect models 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Venza, 2009-2010 Matrix and 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe.
In March 2007, reports of gas pedals being slow to rise after being depressed for acceleration were already raised to Toyota. Engineers fixed the problem in the Tundra pickup in early 2008. In late 2009, 4.2 million vehicles are recalled by Toyota due to floor mats could bend across gas pedals, which may result to rapid acceleration. Still, problems continued in other models which lead to last week’s recall and plan to suspend sales and shut down six factories while Toyota strives to fix the problems.
No less than six deaths have been associated to defective gas pedals. One safety firm says there are more than 2,000 reports of sudden acceleration in Toyotas. Millions of other Toyota owners like Reilly is soliciting for answers, but could not get any.
As released on the company’s website:
Due to the sales suspension, Toyota is expected to stop producing vehicles on the following production lines for the week of February 1 to assess and coordinate activities. The North America vehicle production facilities affected are:
• Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada (Corolla, Matrix, and RAV4)
• Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (Sequoia and Highlander)
• Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky – Line 1 (Camry and Avalon)
• Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (Camry)
• Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (Tundra)
No other North American Toyota vehicle production facilities are affected by the decision to stop production.
