As a novice to domaining, I discovered that in order to get good domain names, including typos, one should be assertive and snappy when it comes to registering domain names. It is like placing a bet on the poker table and being the first whatever the results are.
Typo Domain Name In A blink of an Eye
I was about to register a typo domain name awhile ago and was happy that this one-word-generic-typo domain name is not yet registered. I quickly opened my basic tools which include godaddy.com, name.com and whois.ws. When I was about to register the name at name.com, to my surprise, it was already taken. Frustrated, I went to the whois of godaddy and name.com only to find out that the name is registered TODAY, November 4th, 2008 (Nov 3rd, US time). It was registered to a chinese registrant from China. I really felt bad about not having registered the domain name earlier.
Lesson Learned
The moral lesson here is that, if ever you had this gut feeling of registering a domain name, chances are, this educated guess (backed-up with a few know-how’s of getting a good domain name) is correct. Registering a domain name is as easy as flipping pancakes, and if ever this domain name is a gem all along, compensation can be very rewarding. So act now, do not hesitate and continue looking for good domain names, you may never know, included in your portfolio is million-worth domain name.

I feel your pain! I’ve had a couple names that I found were unregistered, spent an hour doing a little more research on them, went to buy, and 1 or two of them were taken. Either someone was looking over my shoulder, or I’ve got bad luck, or I just need to get off my arse and pull the trigger on the buys!
